Firstly, we thought about who we wanted to appeal to, and we decided to try and make the game accessible to everyone. We want it to be fun for kids, but still be interesting for adults of any age.
We're trying to pump as many facts into it as possible!
The main aim for our game though, is for the user to finish with a greater understanding about what different climates will do to crops commonly kept in Cornwall. To do this we are giving them the opportunity to run a farm in Cornwall! They get to chose the crops they want to grow, when to plant them, and when to harvest them. And the important part, they also get to have control over the weather. At the beginning of the game they get to choose which climate they want to have. In the game there is information about each crop, including when the best time to plant it in a temperate condition would be, and how it copes in different weather conditions. The plan is to make money and save enough to buy a dome, inside the domes you can control what the weather is, and experiment with how is best to grow your crops.
Our multimedia experience is designed to stimulate as many senses as possible without stuffing a bunch of flowers through the screen! We've got the visual stimulus by them being able to see how they're plants are growing. They can also read how is best to care for their plants. And there should be sound effects to go with the weather conditions. We hope that all of this will stimulate everyone's passion to learn how man is changing climate, and what affect this will have on us.
We have collectively decided not to include the usual damage that would happen to crops from animals and humans. As this can be argued to not be directly related to climate change. We decided that we don't want to confuse the user with too much information as this may cloud the message.
For the area of 'playing god' we decided to let the user choose what climate to start off in. And we also decided to include weather domes so that they can control it throughout the game too.
Another idea was that we had the game start off with a story about a child that doesn't understand about why he has to recycle. An idea was that he makes friends with a farmer, or maybe someone working on an allotment, and he tells him all about it.
This could continue onto the game being played as the kid and the farmer gives you hints and tips about when to plant things etc.
